Why do businesses use telephone answering services rather than machines?

The answering service makes the caller think they are talking to a real employee and that their call does matter. Answer phones are impersonal and the caller can't be bothered to leave a message to a company who won't even let them talk to a human. It just about the customer leaveing a message with a person rather than hanging up on a machine.
